Common Signs Of A Failing Automobile Air Conditioner

Posted on: 8 January 2018

If you live in a warm or hot climate, you most likely rely on your vehicle's air conditioning system to keep the inside of your car at a comfortable temperature while driving. Unfortunately, like all automotive parts, the main components of the air conditioning system will eventually wear out and cease to work properly, which leaves you without cool air. Continue reading to learn more about the common signs that your car's A/C may be on the brink of breaking:

Strange Sounds While the Air Conditioner is Running

The most important component of your car's air conditioning system is the compressor. The compressor is responsible for pumping warm air into the condenser and evaporator where it is cooled down before it blows through your air vents. When a compressor wears out completely, your car's A/C system will no longer be able to produce cool air. Loud sounds, such as grinding or squealing, while the air conditioner is running is a common sign of a failing compressor. If you hear these sounds, it is in your best interest to have your car checked out by a mechanic before the A/C fails completely.

Air is Not as Cold as it Should Be

After owning your car for a while, you tend to know how it operates and what to expect. So, if your car's A/C is starting to fail, you will most likely notice that the air coming from the air vents is not as cold as it used to be. In some cases, the air may get gradually warmer as the air conditioning system struggles to produce chilled air. Don't ignore a change in the temperature of the air from your car's air conditioner-- it is best to have the air conditioning system repaired so you don't get left without A/C on a hot summer day.

Leaks

An air conditioning system that is not in good repair and is close to breaking may leak refrigerant or compressor oil. These leaks may be hard for you to detect on your own, because they won't necessarily leave stains on your driveway. But, a mechanic will easily be able to identify leaks from the broken car air conditioning system. In addition to regular maintenance, such as having the oil changed and the transmission flushed, make sure you have your A/C system inspected and tuned up regularly in order to identify major problems that can indicate that your A/C is failing.
